If you could post a new song every weekend, that would be cool. :)
Your Love is Forever- George Harrison
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DedZulAqPSA
-
Listening to that George song right now. Doesn't even ring a bell, and I bought this album when it came out. And I liked it!
Excellent song and solo.
I might have posted this, but I love this song.

Was looking forward to someone continuing this.
Listening to this beautiful song right now with coffee on a Saturday morning. No one in the house right now but me.
What a freakin beautiful voice on a beautiful song. Holy Sh**. Wow.
Seriously. That was something else man. EDIT: Oh yeah!!! This guy! You posted something about him way way back. I need to look into getting a vinyl of him. Totally forgot how enthralled I was by this guys voice.
I hope youve never heard this song. Or at least I hope youve never heard this cool live version.

Nice! The guy in the tie-dyed shirt to the far right looks like he just got off his surf board and joined in. :I
Yeah, that Ron song is his Here There and Everywhere or God Only Knows song.

Both excellent choices!

Wow. It's here already.
I actually didnt listen to your link...but I did get up and put on Al's Greatest Hits because of your post. It's like the fourth or fifth song on the album, so I will listen to it.
I looooooove the drum sound they got on this song.
Chas and Dave are novelty singers. Anyway. This was a pretty big song when I lived there.

From last year. Kind of crazy that Anderson sounds better now.

MAN!!!! I should have gone to this show when they played Atlanta.....and it was at my fave venue, too. I must have been short of funds at the time.

I cant believe you dug out a Gilbert OSullivan song! I just love that guy. I hadnt heard that song before. Very nice.
I just came across a song that I didnt realize was recorded in my basement. They must have come over while I was at work. I told them they were always welcome to come over on any day. Its not like they werent supposed to be here. I just didnt realize they filmed a song at my house until tonight.

Crazy good effortless vocals by Macca.

I like when they sing into the same mic. Its weird that Ringo comes across so well singing when singing so far from the mic on such an old mic.

That version of "Act Naturally" might be my fave version of that song....delivered with some humor and supreme confidence.

Did anyone else get the feeling they were on autopilot for the whole performance? I mean, I really liked it all, but they seemed almost like "ok...here we go again".

Absolutely. Not sure why. They had prob seen so many audiences that it would take something special for them to liven up or they were just not in the mood to bring 100% of themselves to the show. Goodness knows why.
-
The DW vid was great. 8)
The stuff on his vocal was weird though eh?

Just noticed that too. They didnt need to do that either.

Same song Live:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVFT_4tJ2P4
-
Great guitar sound. Great song. Cool vibe to the song.
I liked the live version A LOT.
The video was funny because it seemed like that was supposed to be his girlfriend lying to him and cheating. Then you look at the guy singing and the guy she's cheating with...
if my wife met that guy I wouldn't see her for days! Ha!
It's cool that you posted that song because I'd never heard it nor had I ever heard of Colin James.

This is one of my favorite things about music. Just a moment where artist and fans come together as one.
I also like it when when a person doesn't quite have the talent but is out there giving what they've got. Wayne won't be going on The Voice any time soon.
-
That was pretty neat with the crowd...just waiting to join in like that. It was like when you have a biscuit for your dog and it sits there patiently waiting for it. haha ;D

Nice. Nice! And Id never heard that Cure tune, so that was extra cool.
Mine is a song from our gig last night. We sucked but it was cramped.
The city sets up tents for about 20 musicians and bands to play along one of our downtown streets. We decided to park under the tent and set up in the car.

Ha! That was cool! 8)
Are your ears ringing today from that horn at the back of your head? ;)
-
Super neat! Kinda reminded me of the old Top Gear episode where they had a German brass band riding in a car with them....
-
Bit early, but what the heck. All this Rolling Stone talk, it reminded me of Neil Young's Borrowed Tune...which he admits he took from the Rolling Stones.
Original : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5-Uqj8TwZk
Cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcC25inZynk&list=PLYWBtaCyHp95yxbovjJYUd0wcWAzug6iw

Which Stones tune is it? I totally recognize something there.
Of course....Lady Jane. Dang, had to look it up.
-
Long weekend coming up here in Canuckistan(Thanksgiving)...so...here's one for You.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx5TY4EGUns
-
That's a goodie!
-
What a song. I kind of like the old version better than the remastered.
-
I like the backstory on this tune. George wrote it for Ronnie Spector, did the backing track, she didn't release it...so he did it himself. The reason his vocal is so high is that the backing track was in Ronnie's vocal range. I think George singing in that register gives the song lots of energy.
-
Never knew that! Nice!

Nice. Lyrics are great. Nice band name.
The following is one of my favorite songs of all-time from the old days. I especially love the tone they got on the guitar.

Song for the Season. :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EGpkV_RNT4
-
Listened to the whole song for the first time ever. Ive played it in different bars a few times as the bass player but had never heard the whole song except for about 10-20 seconds of it. Is there bass on any version of it? Ive always made up a bass part when Ive been in on this song.
And...
This song has always been a favorite because of the lyrics. I think Paul Simons lyrics are second to no ones.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwOgXWOX-iE
-
Yeah, I love that Simon song too. So simple, yet it works beautifully with the melody.
Here are the Harvest Moon bass tabs.
https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/n/neil_young/harvest_moon_ver2_btab.htm
-
I dig that whole album, but that tune particularly....the Paul Simon one....rather appropriate, considering Two's post in Thinking Peeps.

That was killer. Never heard that either. Nice.

Nice! The production on that is fantastic. :)
-
Know who did that? A lady named Lari White, who's had her own singing career in Nashville, but might be as well known for being in the movie "Castaway". She played the lady whose package Tom Hanks delivers after his return to civilization. Well, it's assumed the package belongs to her....she's the lady at the intersection who gives Tom directions as he's leaving the road she is turning on to. Neat, huh?
BTW. Been a Mullins fan for years, but it was that production that made me buy it instantly.
-
Oh wow...that's neat. :)
Funny we thought the same thing(production). Great minds think...well....sometimes it's just a coincidence. :o ;D
-
Man, Bolin could play eh? :P
-
Oh wow...that's neat. :)
Funny we thought the same thing(production). Great minds think...well....sometimes it's just a coincidence. :o ;D

-
Wow. That is one weird, obscure fact. How int he heck would you ever know that one? !!!
I was so blown away with the great sound on the Mullins track, I HAD to know who was responsible.....it doesn't sound like a typical SM record. I mean, the sound on his records tends to be quite neutral, letting the song speak for itself. This album, not just the one song, had a sound unlike the rest of his. When I saw the name Lari White, I recognized it from the late 90's when she put a number of songs in the country charts. Same thing with "Castaway"....thought I recognized her in the movie and stayed for the credits to see if it was her. I had NO idea she was in the record production end of things now.

Both Sides Now
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcrEqIpi6sg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcrEqIpi6sg)
What a voice and what a melody.
I look at her and see youth. She's so old now...so am I.
She was not an anti-war activist in the 60s. Youd think she would have been.
Why did you pick this song?
Joni: "Americans have decided to be stupid and shallow since 1980. Madonna is like Nero; she marks the turning point."
-
Joni has been ill a lot of years, so when the grumpy guss starts flowing, everybody needs to get out of the way. It's sad that beautiful voice was ravaged by 50 years of smoking non-stop. Lovely song though. :)
Nice cover :)

I love her quote about Madonna and America.
Watching that video Im thinking, "One woman. A guitar. A voice. And shes entertaining millions of a tv audience."

Great solo version of Sinner.
XTC strike me as a band that are almost great. I've got quite a few of their albums, I like them and feel like I should get excited by them but never quite do.
-
Yeah, it makes you wonder what would have happened to them if the Dumb and Dummer producers used the XTC original of Peter Pumpkin Head instead of a cover by Crash Test Dummies. At least CTD was very faithful to the original.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYupSHWEJxA
-
Dumber! ;) ;D

I wonder if the guys in XTC were contacted about using the original? Must find out...

The Old Fashioned Way 8)

-
Two, that was a little slice of smooth heaven!
-
Yeah, I've always been intrigued by singers who's phrasing is kind of all over the place, but it makes sense to the lyrics. Sinatra does it too. Van Morrison. Elton John. Probably others I don't recall at the moment. It's kind of cool really. You have a beautiful melody backing you, but the lyrics are more important. Here's another of his songs that Costello had a bit of a hit with.
Charles Aznavour
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1YipLB-rQQ
I'm having a déjà vu moment. Have I done this before? ???
-
Old Fashioned Way. That was very Bert Kampfert-sounding as the backup band. Great tune.

Great song :) My first thought Tom Petty, but as it went on it changed. Man, they just keep putting out good stuff eh?
-
Well I waited til Sunday morning coffee to listen to my weekend songs.
Holy sh**. These are great. To hear these in a quiet living room filled with plants and burning incense is great. Those songs by Flynn and Pugwash are great.
Loved them. Never heard either of them. Never heard of either artist.

What a band, man.....nice!
-
Great song. Great energy from that band and Paul. I wish he would do more stuff like this and film the show in a small venue for all of us to see. I would pay to see a live airing of a Paul show doing obscure stuff at a small club.

Just stumbled upon this gem from last year....perfect for a snowy day...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGv0RpFWEak

Have you got snow, Merv? ???
I just got the feeling that Brown-eyed Handsome Man and Take it Easy by the Eagles have some...err..similarities.
A-a-arrested on charges of unemployment
He was sitting in the witness stand
The judges wife called up the district attorney
She said, "Free that brown-eyed man.
If you want your job, you better free that brown-eyed man."
or
Well, I'm running down the road
tryin' to loosen my load
I've got seven women on
my mind,
Four that wanna own me,
Two that wanna stone me,
One says she's a friend of mine
:P
-
It's mostly melted away now, but yeah we did. There are some similarities between those two songs....you can actually sing the lyrics to one while hearing the tune of the other.
-
Just some guys you may have heard of. ;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCtzkaL2t_Y

I dont get that version. That's the entirety of one of the rooftop audio versions with a mix of rooftop video? Or is it a mix of video?
And...thats one of my favorite Lennon songs.

Ians voice is so beautiful.

That was pretty cool. I think it might have been even better if he had not played bass and just done vocals. Thats maybe not a song to do both....esp for him because it seemed like he could have killed this with undivided attention. Anyway...what a cool version. Didnt know theyd done that.
And...Yes I ordered a Roger Whitaker lp because of you. I hope it gets here before Saturday so I can play it at our record sale this weekend at our local university.
-
I just looked it up and Will Lee was 62 when he did this. Pretty amazing job considering. Hell of a last note too ;D ;D

Romeo and Juliet.
I saw them in the early 90s in a high school gym. I think Ive seen them 5 times. Anyway I was standing about 3 feet from Amy when she did this one.

Oh nice. First song I even had on CD. It came with the Phillips player when I bought it. :)
-
Restless- Gordon Lightfoot :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6y8EcGYMq8
-
Wow. It seems weird that theyd put Amys version as a song that came with a player. Youd think theyd have pushed Galileo.
Gordon has played in our town but I missed him.
I like the subtle accompaniment they add to his playing.

Muttonbirds - Nature
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0G-8V4nCpc
This is regarded as a kiwi classic. I heard the guy that wrote it sing it, to his acoustic guitar at our local school fair. The Mutton Birds version breathed new life into it but I still adore the original:

Yeah, I only knew about them because I have one of those promotion CD's with a bunch of artists on the same label. This is the song that was on it.

Anchor Me is my favourite Mutton Birds song. Thanks for sharing that I hadn't seen the acoustic version before, it's an excellent performance. Helen Kelly worked with me ex, nice homage to her.
But with the other video, I think with that video they were pressured by the record company to make a rock star version when they were trying to break through in the UK. This was the original video which seems more in keeping:
https://youtu.be/kPIhhqM4b4s
Here's an earlier song of McGlashan's that I really like, when he was part of a quirky duo the Front Lawn:

20f3. nice one. Great voice. Great voice that would be kicked off of American Idol in a second. Id never heard of this guy, but how cool this was. Artists like this just dont get the hype they should.
Mine is again the Indigo Girls.

Yeah, I find it interesting the voices people adopt later on. Considering he was born in Scotland and grew up in Toronto, you'd wouldn't think he'd sing with a country accent. :)
You can never go wrong with Indigo Girls. :)

Love some Del Amitri...

Tom Jones
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ia6-5gC5ArM
John Barry teamed up with lyricist Don Black and wrote the song "Thunderball". The song was sung by Tom Jones who, according to Bond production legend, fainted in the recording booth after singing the song's final, high note. Jones said of the final note: "I closed my eyes and I held the note for so long when I opened my eyes the room was spinning."

Anybody who hates that song can just turn in their record collection to the music police. ::) ;) ;D
There was a tribute album put out a few years ago that Brian Wilson gave this song a go. It was cool, but I was so disappointed to hear that Justin Currie chickened out and picked a different tune. When Jimmy Webb personally asks you do do a song, you should probably not chicken out. :(
-
You know, there's a podcast called "Swinging through the sixties" that just did an epp about what they termed the worst songs ever to chart....and this one was included. They were quick to point out that they didn't mean it was a good song, just a bad choice of singers. I disagree wholly with them....Richard Harris brings just the right amount of pathos to the party.
-
Yeah, that's a great podcast. :) A lot of complaints about that song are the lyrics. But...they meant something to the guy who wrote them so you know...jeesh..at least he doesn't mention Yoko every song. lol. ;D
There is a live version on Youtube of Richard Harris singing it....he nailed it. Pretty good vocalist really.

-
I don't get the people who say Richard Harris can't sing....he'd done "Camelot" by then and that's got lots of singing in it. He's fine, right? :-)
-
Yeah, I mean....I must be musical. I own hundreds of CDs! ;) ;D

Sarah Harmer - Silver Road

THAT's a fun group! Gotta explore their stuff...
-
Yeah, that was really cool. Looks like fun! :)
-
I thought I'd add another song. Never heard of this guy but apparently, he has a cult following after he disappeared without a trace in 1975.
Jim Sullivan - UFO

That was so cool I went to look to pick up the vinyl online. $20. I was hoping for slightly less but am still considering it.
Great pick again 2.

Cool...very 60's sounding tune. :)

That song rips me every time...
-
I wonder how much money Ray Davies has made from this song. I've always liked it, and everyone covering it did a great job. :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8pkG9cyBsc
-
I didnt know he wrote that and I really wasnt that familiar with the Pretenders version but I do remember hearing it long ago.
What a great tune. Chrissie is so bad ass. What a great great talent.
Davies is a great songwriter that I was never that familiar with until the last couple years.
Side note:
You ever read his review of Revolver when he first heard it?
Wow. Its quite something.
-
Yeah, the Pretenders version was the first time I heard it too.
Sia did a nice job too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jiOKtTTzxE
I'll look up the review. Thanks for the heads up. :)
-
I think I heard in the past that Ray and Chrissie were a couple at one point and that's how she got the song. The Kinks never recorded it, which is bizarre really. How many great songs are out there that are still in demo form.
-
Yeah I think they did date or something around that time.

-
Dammit you guys...I don't have time to fall in love with somebody new! :-* :'( ;D
-
Ha!
Now we are torn between Chrissie and Sharon...after having to watch a Bangles video last week.
Posting a picture of Linda Ronstadt from the 60s will only make it worse.

Man, that Valdy song is terrific!! Why have I never heard of that guy?
-
Cuz he's Canadian and gets snowed in a lot? ;)
He's been around forever. Has a bunch of (hit) songs here from many years ago. He's playing here in June. I should probably go!
There is a Live version of that Simple Life song that is my favourite. I can not find it anywhere...not even on his albums. I played it all the time off an album in the olden days though...so I'm wondering if it's on a compilation or something.

Another entry for the weekend. Heard this for the first time yesterday.

Ha. All music I never would have heard. And yes Valdy is great. Never heard his stuff ever.
3 of my friends who manage to come over for music a few times every year were filmed doing this song up the street at our library.
I don't know the bass player or horn player.

Not usually a "jam band" type of guy, but this 'un makes me tap me feet...
-
Pretty nice. I'd never heard of them before so I watched a few other videos too. Nice groove and I really like the keyboards. Sort of plays piano like Howard Jones. :)
-
That's what I was thinking, too. And the production is pretty nice and clean for a new record.
-
A lot of people up here in Canuckistan hate this song. Not sure why. I think it's a great pop song. :)

An underrated guitar player as well...

Ordinarily, I'd post just a video link here, but there's a short review that kinda sums this whole album up well. Here's Jason Collett...

Jumping back to the original song at the top of this thread. The song was written about the killing of a black man at the hands of police in Ferguson, MO. The song was a wake-up call then and a kick in the gut at the same time....it is truly heartbreaking that these sorts of things continue to happen in the country I love, but understand is flawed, and have done for most of its history. It's gotta get better at some point, doesn't it?
What a doof I am! This song was not at the top of the thread.....here's the link.
