Title: Something My Daughter Wrote....Timely Stuff
Post by: Mervap on June 13, 2020, 07:43:08 pm
My daughter is 18. Sometimes, I am lucky enough to see her perspective on things.....

"Will the world ever  be at peace? That's a question that I ask myself all the time. Will there ever be a point in human society where there's NO arguing, rioting or fighting? Will there ever be a time to where we're not scared to go outside without having to look behind our backs every minute? Yes, I do think that will happen, but it depends on what people want to do about it and make a change that does not involve fighting or arguing. It's up to us to make a change. It's up to us to stand up for what's right and for things that mean something to us, but in a peaceful way, that does not involve bloodshed or someone ending up in a hospital bed."

"It is up to us to make a change."

That's where opinions diverge and the breakdowns begin.

The change I desire is to invest in these predominantly Black neighborhoods over the next 40-50 years.
400 yrs of discrimination.
It's time to begin making up for that.

Many, many people disagree with that plan.

Totally understand your point....Dan Carlin, host of two of my fave podcasts, said this,"How can we agree to come together and solve problems when we can't even agree on what the problems are?"

I posted that primarily because she is asking the same question I was when I was a young lad. I grew up on a large diet of Star Trek, the original series....I always liked the show because it projected a future, however fictional, where many of the problems that humans have faces for ever had been solved for the most part. Roddenberry himself said this:

"Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms."

The longer I have lived the more I realize that it will take a lot longer than it did in that show.

Anyone who is a student of history, American History in particular, has to see that, from the very beginning, the people who came here to build a new world lost sight of the fact that there was already a world here. We blew that chance to be good neighbors to the actual Americans (Native) and then doubled down by bringing people from other places as unwilling labor to help build it. The list of sins is long and gruesome....and it IS time to begin, really this time, to try and make it as right as we can.

You and your daughter both have a great way of writing statements that show your concern for the world and the well-being of its inhabitants.

And great point about her perspective being from youth.  I said and wrote the same things she said also.
They are thoughts from the heart.

And look...my generation fucked it up and didn't create what could have been created.

I think her generation can.  For real, I think her generation can create the world that mine didn't...especially after reading her thoughts.
