I don't know about legitimately.
Anyway...
I think Brian had seen him drum in some Liverpool show years before he filled in with The Beatles at that session.
Seemed like a good dude. Sorry to hear hear he died.

I used to like The Smithereens, but I came across this clip of them playing an impromptu gig with Andy White at 81 years old on drums - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiajRpcei-U - have to say the band unfortunately do him an injustice in this case.
Being a bit older than the Beatles, it did feel like only a matter of time before this time arrived. I knew he was a well-known session musician but didn't know he played the drums on Tom Jones' 'It's Not Unusual' and Lulu's 'Shout' He seemed to be England's answer to Hal Blaine!
