R.I. P George Martin
« on: March 09, 2016, 02:06:35 am »

What a blow, to come home from work today and hear that Sir George has passed.

Easily my favourite producer of all-time. An inspiration to anyone who has ever used a 4-track tape recorder to hear what can be accomplished with such equipment.

I think his best work on a song was probably Strawberry Fields Forever. Such a triumph over relatively basic recording technology.

At 90, he had a good innings. But he was one of those blokes, you felt he would live forever..  :'(

I must say, I'm a bit shocked that every news site I go to, that his passing isn't the lead story. In fact...it's quite a way down the pages.  :o

An icon.  He was really loved by millions.  He did The Beatles right.  He cared about them and their art and never asked for any recognition or credit.  He deserved more credit than he got but never asked for it.

His biography, "All You Need Is Ears", is a fine read. Parts of it are pretty technical, but it's a great insight as to exactly where Martin was in his career when he met The Beatles....it really is true that timing is everything.

I haven't read his autobiography, I have got his making of Sgt pepper book.

What can i say? The Beatles were blessed in a lot of ways. They found a manager that loved them and went out of his way to see them succeed. All four band members were very close and worked perfectly together and they found a gifted creative producer who was perfect for them, could do arrangements, enhanced what he heard but let them call the shots.

On top of that he was a good man. He had a good innings but no matter how old someone is it is always a shock when they die.

This was well said.  And...I just heard that when asked who the fifth Beatle was, he said it was Neil.  How humble is that?  Neil was a loyal guy, but The Beatles would have done quite well without him.  George Martin, however, played a crucial role in their greatness.

Thanks, I agree there is no denying that he played a key role. But I do think George Martin was correct that the Beatles themselves were the main drivers, but GM had a real sensitivity to what they were doing and was an amazing enabler. Some of it came from GM's creativity but it was a sympathetic creativity, that sought to support rather than shine in it's own light.

I just read somewhere by one of their close associates (cant remember which book) that there came a point where they almost started producing themselves.  Not that GM didnt do anything or produce them too.  But this guy was saying that it was pretty early on that their production ideas started to play a bigger and bigger role.  And I remember thinking that the time he pointed out that this started happening was earlier than I would have thought.

Thinking back to their earlier records, I think it was George Martin's idea to begin 'I Feel Fine' with feedback - the first time feedback was heard on a record!  ;D

Yes.  It was the boys wish to have it on the record, but it was GM who said he could/would edit it into the beginning.
