Original Versions of HUGE Hits
« on: March 19, 2016, 12:07:14 pm »

Forgive me if this idea has been done before. If it is, think of this as a Cover Version of the thread. ;)

This is interesting.

Byrds do the Turtles hit You Showed Me.  McGuinn actually wrote the song though.

Big Mama Thornton with 'HOUND DOG' - back in 1952!!! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoHDrzw-RPg

(I actually think this version kicks more ass than Elvis's version)

Wow, so they're going on in the comments that Albert Hammond sued Radiohead for stealing 'Creep' from this song! It sounds nothing like it!! People are saying it's the same chord progression - BUT it's in another key!!!!! And the melody and rhythm is completely different (Creep is based on anacruses rhythmwise for a start). That's bananas that they had to give Albert Hammond a songwriting credit. In that case why didn't The Beach Boys give Chuck Berry a credit for 'Surfin' USA'!!!?! It could go on and on. Everything in music is derivative of something - subconscious or not.

Here's another one - Robert Knight's 1967 recording of 'Everlasting Love' - everyone is more familiar of course with The Love Affair's 1968 version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR8Qe6lX7vc

Actually, they did:

Quote
When the single was released in 1963, the record listed Brian Wilson as the sole composer although the song was published by Arc Music, Chuck Berry's publisher. Later releases, beginning with Best of The Beach Boys in 1966, listed Chuck Berry as the songwriter. Later releases list both writers although the copyright has always been owned, since 1963, by Arc Music. Under pressure from Berry's publisher, Wilson's father and manager, Murry Wilson, had given the copyright, including Brian Wilson's lyrics, to Arc Music.[5]

Despite tensions with Berry over the controversy at the time, Carl Wilson said the Beach Boys "ran into Chuck Berry in Copenhagen and he told us he loves 'Surfin' U.S.A.'."[6] The group often includes other Berry compositions in their repertoire; for example, during their 50th anniversary concert, "Surfin' U.S.A." is preceded by Berry's "Rock and Roll Music".[

Love this one.....although I like Mama Thornton's song better, they are so different. Hard to compare them, really. I will say that Scotty Moore's proto-rockabilly solo guitar breaks on Elvis' version provided a great blueprint that many were to follow.

I been hearing some news about that Stairway to Heaven lawsuit recently. I remember Kyle posting a youtube vid a few years ago comparing Stairway with Spirit. This could be quite a windfall for Spirit since they say that Stairway has generated over 600 million dollars all on it's own over the years. Crazy huh?

I'd also like Badfinger to get some of that money. Those other bands blatantly stole at least 3 notes from this song.  ;) ;D

Greg, your posts are always the most insightful on this board.  What do you think about the Spirit/Zep issue?

Thanks 2.  I think it's a stretch by Spirit.  You?  I could almost sing While My Guitar Gently Weeps to both of those openings.  Did Spirit bring this issue up immediately after the Zep song came out?  I'm going to have to check out that Magic Christian album.  I never heard Badfinger except for the radio songs.  Now, when someone posts a tune of theirs here on the board, I realize that they are all-time greats.  Man, do I wish those two would have lived.  Great artists.

I don't think it's a huge stretch to say the intros are quite similar...I recall reading that Zep/Page were on the same bill sometime after "Taurus" came out and I'll bet Page was fiddling with the intro and was inspired by it. Not a blatant copy, as the song diverge quite obviously afterwards....not enough, IMHO, to warrant a lawsuit.

Besides, check this melody out around the :32 mark

To me, the sound very familiar. But that doesn't mean it was "borrowed". There are millions of songs. Soon we're going to be sued for singing in the shower. I'm still not sure how it's possible today to write a 100% original song. There are only so many combinations of notes that work together. IF these types of lawsuits keep coming up, it may be worthwhile for somebody to create a computer program that has every song ever recorded loaded into it, so they can all be compared. As soon as 5 notes match up...BOOM...lawsuit!

And Greg...you've given me credit for something I didn't say. Although I agree with the sentiment, I wouldn't want to take credit for something I didn't write originally.  ;) ;D

Yeah, well said.  Suing sometimes is barely real. The party maybe hopes that there will just be an out of court settlement and never go to trial.  Who knows.

(I guess I should have remembered that icon thing or whatever theyre called.  Icons?  I thought youd think it was funny when you read a post of you being quoted as calling me great or whatever I typed on that.  Sorry.  I can only ask you to please remember that you are dealing with an idiot when you deal with most of what I say.)

Just to add more mud to the mixture.. what if I told you that back in 1959, there was a recording featuring the same descending chord figures, that predated 'Taurus', AND 'Stairway To Heaven'?

I present you with Exhibit A - 'Cry Me A River' by folk guitarist Davey Graham ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWeejHJxGjs
