Kyle...2...do you have a preference in which version of Maybe Im Amazed?
Oh yes.. for me the preference is NIGHT AND DAY -
- I am not a fan of the WOA live version at all. This is coming from someone whose first introduction to WOA was the Soily/Maybe I'm Amazed 45 as a 4-year-old. Even then, I thought it was a bit overblown, a bit like how Muse carry on today. But i LOVED Soily!!!!
When I heard the original Maybe I'm Amazed for the first time at age 11 when I bought the 'McCartney' album, I was blown away. THIS is what it is
meant to sound like! Good gritty clear stripped down production, gritty guitars, a real piano (NOT the godawful electric piano sound I was so used to on WOA that always seemed to drown out everything else), a TOP SHELF guitar solo which to me is dead equal with the solo on the LP version of 'Let It Be' (oddly enough, I despise the single version of Let It Be for that very reason - the guitar solo blows big time!), and the vocals in the chorus have more bite and conviction and sung staccato-style, rather than on WOA (and every other live version of the song he's done thereafter) where he kinda drags and drawls it out as if he's running out of breath and struggling to enunciate the lines. Rather than singing
"ba-by-I'm-a-man" it comes out as
"marrrgh-bye-maiiiin" on WOA. Blimmin' awful!
It left me wondering why the original version was never released as a single back in 1970! It was so good. Easily right up there with any of the best Beatles singles.
