Merle Haggard was, hands down, my Mom's favorite singer and songwriter. She liked him so much that she took her three kids to a concert of his around 1973....I was 5 or 6 years old at the time. The bill included Johnny Rodriguez, Donna Fargo and Tom T. Hall. What a bill for my first show! I wish I had paid more attention. This tune was among her faves of his....I can remember after my parents split up her listening to this song, "Release Me" by Engelbert Humperdinck, and "Funny Face" by Donna Fargo and just bawling. I think that, somewhere, my Mom is finally getting Hagg's autograph and getting a hug.
