I know...I know...useless. But...I knew the drummers I dont particularly enjoy would be on here near the top.
I think Ringo, as biased as a probably am, should be way way up there.
I dont know what you think Ringos strengths are, but I think his one strength is what puts him near the top. He had a great feel for the song. I think that was his strength. He had a great feel for the tune and sounded great playing those songs.
I like Al Greens drummer. He was a badass.

To me you can't separate the playing from the music, the best players are those that make the best music. There is no abstract best playing that is separate from great music.
I love Bill Bruford's playing with Yes because it is an essential element of music I love. But his playing with King Crimson I don't care so much about because the music doesn't move me.
Ringo is the perfect drummer for the Beatles and the Beatles music is right at the top of popular music so I like Ringo's drumming more than John Bonhams. Bonham would have been a terrible drummer for the Beatles, he was good for Zeppelin but Zeppelin aren't up there with the Beatles.

I've always dug Ringo's absolute grasp of what a song needs and how he gets that. Where his influence is greatest, I think, is that he inspired an entire generation (me included) to pick up the sticks.

So, on the Something About The Beatles podcast this week....they were talking about Bobby Graham. I'd never heard of him before but they played a poop ton of songs he was on in the 60's and they also mentioned he was in the running after Pete Best was ousted. Dude could play.
