I kind of went over this a few times. What is his basic premise of how Paul saved classic rock? I couldnt quite get it.

Just that 1989 was a year that saw many classic rock artists come back strong, but that "Flowers In the Dirt" was perhaps the strongest of these.

I'll buy a dollar's worth......what Paul might have saved more so was his solo career, which had flagged a good bit. Having said that, I rather enjoyed "Press To Play".
