Many years ago, I heard an interview with the band members of Squeeze. They met Paul McCartney and asked him how do you write a classic song. He said that Paul told him you don't write a classic, you write a simple tune and then just keep adding bits to it. You can't write classic, it just happens after you work on the simple base melody. This video shows that thinking exactly. Pretty neat.
