Color Reporters
« on: November 30, 2013, 09:35:51 pm »

It may be seen as putting the cart ahead of the horse to post about a band that hasn't yet released their first album, but I thought I would make one about a new band from the Netherlands called Color Reporters http://www.colorreporters.com/. The band is made up of veteran musicians from other bands. Though I have no Dutch relatives or ancestry, I somehow find myself a keen follower of the music being made in Holland. In some ways, I believe that the music being made in that country is more along my lines of preference than much of that which is coming out of America. Anyway, the band is newly formed and the material that I've heard is piquing my interest.

Color Reporters:
Bas Wilberink – lead vocals/guitar
Bertolf Lentink – lead vocals/guitar
Caesar Roseboom – keys/guitar/vocals
Rutger Renden – bass/vocals
Nicky Hustinx – drums

Early in the summer, the band put out a YouTube of demo clips for the album they were about to record during the summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi1eABj1dVw. Keep in mind that these are only the demo versions of the songs.

The band posted some videos of their album being worked on in the Op de Bos Studio near the outskirts of the city of Zwolle in the Netherlands:

They released some YouTubes of the work in progress:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJzgLJeLWfA (work on "Even the Bad Ends Badly")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=695ypJarZv0 (drums being recorded with assistance of some live playing)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiUPihvwsOM (working on lyrics with English writer Jez Ashurst, who dropped by the "farm" for a visit)

In August, they performed one of their songs called "Even the Bad Ends Badly": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWZaBhrwDU8

Here is a newly released acoustic session recorded this past summer (during a thunderstorm, it sounds) for a site called Onder Invloed (or "Under the Influence") in which three of the Color Reporters band members, Bas Wilberink, Bertolf Lentink, and Caesar Roseboom, perform three covers and two of their originals from an upcoming album coming out next year: http://onderinvloed.com/home/2013/11/color-reporters/. The first line of the first song covered "Bled White" by Elliott Smith is what inspired the name of the band.

Recently Bertolf (with his other Beatles cover project called Her Majesty performed this track from Abbey Road: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UPsTVlu1-c. And here, they made this little video of "Maybe I'm Amazed" played on a radio show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lID_7TCsSLU. Her Majesty made this video which shows they like to have fun... posted on "back-channels" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3EDVUnhmOg and also here this video of "Dear Boy" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFK1hyx2JVY.

The Color Reporters debut album is to be released some time in 2014. They just signed the record deal a week or so ago. Maybe some of you might be interested.

The first single is "Crack the Code" and they recently finished shooting a video to go along with the song:

Full album will be released mid-March.

It's just out now on iTunes. Listening now...

Here's a (most likely temporary) link to listen to the songs: http://3voor12.vpro.nl/luisterpaal/albums/Color-Reporters.html [tracks now removed]

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/color-reporters/id810786893

Or... I think we have some Kiwis here:

https://itunes.apple.com/nz/album/color-reporters/id810786893

I like what I hear. The Elliott Smith influence - I can hear it.

After listening several times, my favorites from the album are "Even the Bad Ends Badly" and "Crossing an Ocean".

"Crack the Code", "Clarity" (which has a lot of Beatles flavour), "Sing for Massachusetts" (I hear the Macca influence in Bertolf vocals in the verses), "End of Seas", and "Dutch Summer" are all worth hearing.

They named their band from a line in the song "Bled White", one of their favourite songs by the late Elliott Smith, who was American.

I'm a color reporter
(Rose City on the 409)
But the city's been bled white
(White city on the yellow line)
